So of course I carried my affection for and respect of Poachers with me as I sought out each of Franklin’s future books: Hell at the Breach (2003), Smonk (2006), and most recently, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter (2010). It’s got a lot of heart, dark and dramatic with ambience in spades, does a great job depicting rural Mississippi. Set in the southeast corner of Mississippi, land of tiny towns on their way down, and larger towns consisting mostly of churches and strip-malls, Franklin's book goes far past the mystery genre, past the standard "who done it".
