I couldn't find even one character to like. I was surprised it had such a high rating and figure it was due to a bunch of Martin fans. I found the first half of the book slow reading, as it is basically just a long intro to the characters and the situation. From George R.R. All this in a gripping little plot line that takes a few turns, just like a winding river. This book was just a bad read. But when Daenerys finds that the spoils include helpless women, she intercedes—triggering angry dissension between Khal Drogo and his men. It's a much shorter novel, and while it is classified as a horror novel, I would consider it more of a period piece with fantastical elements in play. Descriptions of the river, likewise, are intriguing as well as poetic and have left me with a desire to add sailing on a Mississippi riverboat to my bucket list. Sorry Anne Rice, I loved Lestat, and I loved the entire world you created around those novels but I have to say that I am more in love now with George R.R. provided they fight for him against the army of Robb Stark. Set in 1857 along the muddy Mississippi, FEVRE DREAM introduces Abner Marsh, a remarkably ugly man who longs to captain the fastest steamboat on the river. Good book. Your kind has killed all but a handful of us. Years ago, I read almost exclusively in the "horror" genre, until it (and me) just got tired. I normally hate vampire books... because they're more romance novels than fictional adventures. Martin is best known for his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, but the man has stated before he is most proud of Fevre Dream.
