But it is no ordinary story, it is full of fantasy images, creatures and weird observations. I'm still in awe of how these haunting pictures speak to the alienation that immigrants (or others who are plunged into a totally new situation) experience--all without words. those who liked The Invention of Hugo Cabret, who like magic realism, I'm glad that other people know how to put pictures of the pages of this book into their reviews because if I had that kind of knowledge, I fear my entire review would be page after page of the breathtaking artwork in this wordless graphic novel. No text at all... A short but beautiful graphic novel that leaves you thinking. Dad’s stories are sketchy, and usually focus on specific details, as is the way of most anecdotes – the unpalatable food, too cold or too hot weather, amusing misunderstandings, difficult isolation, odd student jobs and so on. They work by inspiring memory and urging us to fill in the silent gaps, animating them with the addition of our own storyline. Instead of their pets being simply an allegory that represents something that we, the reader would relate to, they're a part of the universal language that EVERYBODY relates to.

I have never been a great reader of comics (having come at illustration as a painter) so much of my research was redirected to a study of different kinds of comics and graphic novels. I am often searching in each image for things that are odd enough to invite a high degree of personal interpretation, and still maintain a ring of truth. One of the foremost themes of the novel is the concept of belonging to a place, in particular the connection to a homeland. Whether this has anything to do with my own life, I’m not sure, it seems to be more of a subconscious than conscious concern. How is the pace of the narrative controlled, especially when there are no words? BELONGING There are no words in this book and none are needed. Even the most imaginary phenomena in the book are intended to carry some metaphorical weight, even though they don’t refer to specific things, and may be hard to fully explain. I got this for my 8 year old Granddaughter and my youngest Daughter. The world he creates is familiar and strange and heartbreaking too. The book had no single source of inspiration, but rather represents the convergence of several ideas. The haunting, luminous illustrations seem to cut straight to the heart. Notably, in Shaun Tan’s graphic novel, The Arrival, the main character experiences the same series of emotions on his immigration journey seeking safe haven. The Arrival is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen, on several different levels. by I have no problem making up a story for the pictures; I just like it more when a story is provided.
