One could argue that expecting dissent fireworks is a bit much to ask from Jia’s highly censorious filmic milieu. The locus of the movie’s welter of subplots about China’s young and restless, the park is also the metaphor of a lifetime, the ultimate manifestation of the ersatz quality of modern life, and an emblem of the promise and disappointment of globalization.
